Basics of the Internet

Communication, Internet, Internet Of Things, Tile
People use the internet every day.  Whether it is for work, for fun, or just passing time, for most people it is a significant factor in their life.  One thing is, most people do not know exactly how it all started.  Some quick history for you, it started off as something called ARPAnet.  It was developed in 1962, and used as a way to transmit data during the cold war with intent to still be functional in case of a nuclear attack.  After some time, Stanford University found out that this would have good applications in archiving research on computer sciences and in 1984 developed the Computer Science Network (CSNET).  Afterwards, a website for for archiving general science research took off, in 1985  the National Science Foundation Network (NSFNET) was developed for general science public research.  And in 1989, the start of the internet as we know it today was began,  the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has developed the hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP).  In 1995 NSFNET was decommissioned, ISP's started developping their own network access points, and that has made the internet into what it is today.

What we use the internet for primarily in this day in age is communication.  Whether it be communicating your feels through a video, sharing a meme on Facebook, or telling your best friend about what happened on Messenger, communication seems to make up a fair chunk of our day to day internet activities.

Another way of communication is Email.  Email is a way to deliver messages from computer user to one or multiple of them over a network.  You can use it for any form of communication, but is primarily used in professional applications, or can be used as a way for signing up for websites.  You can use it to respond to a Craigslist ad, or to send a resume to a potential future boss.  Primarily when people think of email they think of Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, etc.  The format for emails is username@network.com.

Wikis and Blogs are ways to express yourself by sharing things you have learned about, are interested in, or teach people things that they may have no clue about.  A wiki is a user modified database of information.   When people think of a wiki they typically think of Wikipedia or Wikihow.  A blog a website run typically by a person or a handful of people that is written on regularly in an informal manner.  When people think of Blogs, they think of Blogger (😉), Tumblr, WordPress, or potentially blogs like Lifehacker, Engadget, or TechCrunch.

Podcasts or webcasts are ways of communicating similarly to a blog, but with your voice.  It can give your listeners a sense of humanity or feeling while you convey your feeling of the topic at hand.  Also, in the case of a webcast you can also convey your feelings and emotions with facial expressions, as webcasts include video and not just audio.  Typically when people think of podcasts they think of things such as Audible.  As for webcasts, a lot of them are posted on streaming services such as Youtube.

Speaking of streaming services, lets talk about streaming media. "Streaming Media is the process of delivering multimedia data (such as video or audio) from a streaming service provider to an end-user."  It is used for services like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, or Amazon music.

E-commerce is a general term for selling products or services online, while m-commerce is specifically about selling products or services through mobile devices.  When people think of e-commerce or m-commerce, they typically think of things like Amazon or Ebay, when things like the Google Play store, and the Apple app store both are also considered a form of m-commerce too.  E-commerce is not exclusive to physical products, is it also inclusive of digital items too.
